College Leadership & Advisory Board

The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) is an educational institution within the Department of the Navy. The President of the college is accountable directly to the Chief of Naval Operations, who establishes the college's mission, provides general guidelines and appropriated funds for its operation, and selects the president of NWC.

Rear Adm. Darryl "D-Day" Walker is the President of the U.S. Naval War College and a career naval aviator. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985 as an Air Traffic Controller and graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics. Walker received his commission in the U.S. Navy through the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School and was designated a naval flight officer in 1992. He graduated from the Naval War College in 2002 with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. Prior to the Naval War College, Walker served as Deputy Commander of Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber (Navy), U.S. 10th Fleet.

Stephen J. Mariano

Provost Stephen Mariano, Ph.D. most recently served as the deputy commandant and dean of the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy. He also served on the faculties of the School of International Service at American University, National Defense University, the Royal Military College of Canada and the U.S. Military Academy. He holds a B.A. in mathematics and economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, an M.A. in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. in war studies from the Royal Military College of Canada.

Peter F. Halvorsen
Capt., U.S. Navy

Capt. Halvorsen is the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) and a career surface warfare officer. He graduated, with distinction, from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1998, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Halvorsen graduated from Oxford University, with distinction, in 2000 with a Master of Philosophy in Economic and Social History. He graduated from NWC, as Honor Graduate, in 2005 with a Master of Arts in National Security Studies. He has been published in The Journal of Strategic Studies, U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and National Journal Online. His operational assignments include command of USS Carney (DDG 64) and Destroyer Squadron 26.

Abel Griego
Master Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy

Command Master Chief Griego enlisted in the Navy in 1994. He holds an Associate of Science in Computer Information Systems from Columbia College, Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Excelsior College and a Master of Science in technology management from University of Maryland University College. Griego’s military education and training include the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 161), CMC/COB Capstone Course (Class 158) and National Defense University Keystone Joint Senior Enlisted Leader Course (Class 24-1). His CMC tours include guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78), Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Bahrain.
